Compare Cost Per Mile
When
shopping
for a new vehicle in today’s automotive market many consumers
compare the miles-per-gallon ratings of the vehicles they find most
intriguing. Given the escalating gas prices observed in recent years,
who exactly can blame them? But with hybrid vehicles carving out a
healthy niche in the market and the electric car preparing to make its
official debut, how will future consumers calculate mileage costs once
gas-guzzling automobiles are gone for good?
While the vehicles of
tomorrow will run on electricity in lieu of gasoline, there will still
be a cost attached to the amount of energy consumed. Therefore, instead
of comparing MPG ratings, prospective car buyers will soon compare CPM
ratings, or cost-per-mile ratings.

Since
electricity is measured in terms of kilowatts instead of gallons,
car owners will soon begin comparing how many miles per kilowatt each
model on the market offers, so they can determine which particular
models offers the lowest driving costs. While on the surface this might
sound like something out of a science fiction novel, the basic premise
is quite similar to how today’s car owners are already
calculating mileage costs. It boils down to grasping how much energy an
automobile consumes, and then using that information to come to a
decision on which vehicle will cost you the least amount of money in
the long run. Today we compare MPG ratings and tomorrow we will compare
CPM ratings. What we as drivers can control is how we use that
information to reduce driving costs while still getting where we need
to go.
